Khune stripped of Chiefs captaincy and suspended after 'rigorous' disciplinary process

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is weathering a storm as the Soweto giants have taken the extraordinary step of suspending him and revoking his club captaincy.

The decision follows internal investigations into alleged disciplinary transgressions, creating a cloud over Khune's illustrious career with the team as he is in his final seven months of his contract.

Two weeks ago, media reports alleged that the 36-year-old arrived at Chiefs' Naturena base in Soweto for training while under the influence of alcohol.

Although the club has not explicitly confirmed the details of Khune's actions, the decision to suspend him and revoke his captaincy strongly implies that there is substance to the reported incident.

Khune will undergo a programme aimed at supporting his personal growth and development, according to Chiefs' announcement.

"At the conclusion of the club's rigorous disciplinary processes last week, the committee has taken stern action and decided that Itumeleng Khune should be temporarily separated from the team until certain conditions have been fulfilled," the club said in a statement released on Thursday.

"As a club that upholds the highest levels of professionalism, in which discipline forms a key component, Kaizer Chiefs initiated an internal investigation after certain incidents involving Khune came to our attention.
