Chimaev took a win against #2 ranked Welterweight contender Gilbert Burns during UFC 273 via unanimous decision.

At the time, Chimaev was ranked #11, and after the slugfest between the two 170-pound fighters, it is likely that he will be facing another top-ranked fighter next.

UFC President Dana White revealed ahead of UFC 273 that Chimaev would be getting the fight against Covington if he were successful at the PPV event.

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, White noted: “I think if Khamzat Chimaev wins this weekend, we see him and Colby Covington next…So I have a fight coming up on ABC.

“In a perfect world, if everything plays out right, I would love to do Khamzat vs. Colby (there) if Khazmat should win on Saturday night.”

Speaking at the UFC 273 post-fight press conference, Chimaev said that he “doesn’t care” who the company put in front of him next inside the octagon.

He said: “I don’t care. I said everybody, I’ll fight everybody. These guys that are like ‘Oh I’m number two and Khamzat is number eleven’ and the fight is like nothing good for Gilbert.

“Who cares about that s—t, you know? We all want to fight each other to make money, you know? We fight for our families. I don’t care who I fight. Do I get money? I get my 50gs, I knock someone out, I am happy.”
