Key Rangers figure on reasoning behind highly-rated EFL signing

Zak Lovelace’s long talked about move from Millwall to Rangers was finally confirmed yesterday.

Rangers announced that the highly-rated 16-year-old would be departing the Championship club and joining their academy side.

Speaking as part of the announcement, Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson revealed why the club wanted to get Lovelace to Ibrox, pointing to his potential and ability to progress as key factors.

“We are delighted to welcome Zak to Rangers.” Wilson told Ranger club media.

“He is an exciting young player and one we are sure will progress here.

“He has developed really well with the staff at Millwall and we can see lots of potential in him.

“A key part of our scouting strategy has been to identify and invest in talent to strengthen our pipeline and the strategy is working successfully for us with Calvin Bassey and Charlie McCann being examples of that.

“Our scouts are doing a great job and are working on a number of emerging talents this summer with Lancelot Pollard also recently joining from Aberdeen.”

Lovelace made his Championship debut for Millwall in December in a brief cameo against Coventry City at just 15-years-old.

The player, who turned 16 in January, would go on to make four further appearances from the Millwall bench as the season played out.

Millwall were keen to keep hold of Lovelace, but it appears his head was turned by a club of Rangers’ size.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Zak Lovelace gets on at Millwall.

Making his debut at such a young age shows he is clearly a talented player with lots of potential, but Rangers task is harnessing it and allowing him to grow.

Only time will tell whether or not it was the right move for the player to depart Millwall so early in his career.
