Kevin van Veen 'set for FC Groningen medical' as Motherwell exit nears

Motherwell’s Dutch striker Kevin van Veen is set to undergo a medical with FC Groningen as his move away from Fir Park draws closer.

Sky Sports are reporting the 32-year-old is set to become one of the Dutch Eerste Divisie's side top earner after agreeing terms on a move.

It was reported last week that FC Groningen, who were relegated from the top flight last season, tabled a £500,000 bid for the Steelmen’s player of the year, which Fir Park chiefs were said to be considering.

Now it looks like the Steelmen have accepted an offer, with van Veen due to undergo a medical.

Van Veen spoke with Groningen earlier this month after a sensational season in Scotland, which saw him hit 29 goals in all competitions.

He also scored in 11 consecutive games to break a 103-year-old club record.

He still has one year left on his contract at Fir Park and Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell said before the end of the season it would take a ‘life-changing’ fee for the club to part with the player.

He said: “The one thing I do know is the only way Kevin would ever be happy about leaving this club is if he felt it was some sort of offer that would be life-changing for Motherwell.

“If it’s not, then Kevin van Veen will remain a Motherwell player.”

As the club returned for pre-season training on Monday, van Veen was absent from any imagery.
