Kevin Campbell says Luiz should join Arsenal
Douglas Luiz has an uncertain future at Aston Villa after struggling for consistency under Steven Gerrard this season. The 23-year-old has operated in a makeshift defensive-midfield role which has resulted in mixed performances and Gerrard is reportedly open to letting him go.
The Villa boss wants to bring in one of Kalvin Phillips, Yves Bissouma or Boubacar Kamara as a replacement for Luiz, and Kevin Campbell believes Arsenal should capitalise on the situation. He says the Brazilian international would improve the squad as he’s a great ball-player.
Campbell told Football Insider: “I think he’d be a great partner for (Thomas) Partey. You can see (Arsenal) struggling in midfield right now. Douglas Luiz is hungry, young and is a good ball player. I think he could come in and do a really good job.”
Arsenal aren’t short of deep-lying midfielders with Partey, Granit Xhaka, Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny, but Lokonga has been in and out of the team while Elneny has spent most of the season on the periphery. Luiz would surely jump at the chance to join the Gunners too, so might he be on the move this summer?
The 23-year-old impressed for Villa last season and was regarded as one of the best Premier League midfielders, but things have gone stale. Luiz has put in poor performances at times and no longer has the trust of his manager if he could be sold, so the writing appears to be on the wall.
That could be good news for Arsenal.
