Keogh's late, late winner gives Sligo major boost

Seamas Keogh struck in the third minute of added time as Sligo Rovers interim boss John Russell got his term underway with a dramatic win over Derry City at the Showgrounds.

Jamie McGonigle had cancelled out Garry Buckley's opener and with the game heading for a draw, Keogh struck with a composed winner in the 93rd minute.

Looking for their first league win in exactly one month, Rovers looked a much improved outfit from their last day out against Bohs.

Adam McDonnell turned down a great chance to set the home side on the way just three minutes in but the former Shels man mis-hit Aidan Keena’s square ball just seven yards from goal.

Both Ronan Boyce and James Akintunde had half chances for a sluggish looking visitors, who struggled to stamp their authority in the opening exchanges.

Rovers hit the lead on 20 minutes. McDonnell’s corner from the right floated over a group of City defenders as Buckley peeled away at the back post to nod home his second of the season.

Derry, led by Ruaidhri Higgins for the 50th time, then almost hit their opponents on the break on 25.

With Rovers players committed, Joe Thomson found himself one-on-one with Ed McGinty. Thomson looked favourite to level the game, however the Sligo stopper somehow managed to get a hand to the ball as the former Celtic attacker tried to go around his fellow Scot.

Rovers undid all their hard work on the stroke of half-time as City struck back in fortuitous circumstances.

Buckley’s attempted clearance came off a team-mate and with the Sligo rearguard standing still, McGonigle capitalised as he calmly tucked the ball past McGinty on the spin.
