Kenny Dalglish insists Rangers SHOULD be beating Servette and says it’s payback time for Michael Beale after the Ibrox board’s backing of him - starting with Champions League group stage qualification.

The Englishman has brought in a total of nine new players in a summer overhaul of the squad he inherited from predecessor Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The Dutchman guided the Light Blues into the group stage of UEFA’s premier competition by seeing off Union Saint-Gilloise and PSV Eindhoven in the qualifying rounds.

Rangers face Servette in the third round qualifying with the first leg at Ibrox on Wednesday as Beale’s men look to bounce back from their opening day Scottish Premiership defeat at Kilmarnock. And Dalglish, writing in his Sunday Post column, said: “Michael Beale will have a full dossier on the Swiss side, no doubt, and no stone will be left unturned. But, for me, it’s about what Rangers do. This is a tie that the Scottish side should be winning. Michael has been backed very well by the Ibrox board. They have signed nine players and spent a lot of money.

“It’s now payback time and getting into the Champions League is target No. 1 for Michael and the players. The investment into the team is to get into the lucrative group stage and then win the SPFL Premiership. In the past week alone, around £5million has been spent too bring in Danilo from Feyenoord and Jose Cifuentes from Los Angeles.

“Michael has been fulsome in his praise of both and they will have important roles to play in the short, medium and long term. It’s now up to the players to go on to the pitch and back up what their manager has been saying about them.
