Kelyn Cassidy one win away from securing Olympics berth
Light heavyweight Kelyn Cassidy has moved to within one win of booking his place at Paris 2024 after a unanimous decision victory over Armenia's Rafayel Hovhannisayn in their last-16 bout at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy.
After coming out on top on the judges' cards after the first round, the Waterford fighter dominated the second in the men's 80kg bracket.
Hovhannisayn, who was struggling with a cut above his eye, harried Cassidy in a frantic final round but the 26-year-old survived the onslaught to qualify for the quarter-finals.
The top four in the 80kg category will guarantee their places at the Olympics.
Daina Moorehouse missed out in the last-eight after the Wicklow native lost 3-2 by split decision against Uzbekistan's Sabina Bobokulova in the women's 50kg category.
The evening session will see Tyrone's Jude Gallagher face Moroccan Soulaimane Samghouli for a place in the men's 57kg quarter-finals.
