Kelyn Cassidy one step closer to Paris with Bangkok win

Kelyn Cassidy has moved one step closer to booking a ticket for the Paris Games after securing a win over India's Abhimanyu Loura at the Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok.

The Waterford native was the only Irish fighter in action on Monday and came through with the vital win to move into the last 16 of the 80kg category.

Cassidy took the bout following a third round stoppage and will box for a place in the quarter-finals on Thursday, where he will go head-to-head with Aas Stiven from Estonia.

The St Saviours Crystal boxer will have to make it to final to guarantee himself a spot at the Olympics. Should he lose in the semi-finals, he'd face a box-off to nab one of the places on offer.

Elsewhere, former world champion Amy Broadhurst has won her first fight as she bids to reach the Olympics, fighting for Great Britain.

The Dundalk native is competing in the 60kg category - the same as reigning gold medallist Kellie Harrington - and she took her first step towards reaching Paris by beating Spain's Sheila Martinez.
