Keith Walker finishes second to Phil Appleby in round five of the Wigmore CC Evening TT Series

Keith Walker overcame injuries from a crash to compete in round five of the Wigmore CC Evening TT Series - taking second place.

Walker finished behind Phil Appleby in an experienced field of cyclists for the latest round of the time trial series at Iwade.

Cold and windy conditions made life tough for the riders during the opening two rounds while the previous two weeks were cancelled because of heavy rain. Finally, last week’s conditions were more favourable for fast cycling.

All 12 riders that took the start were experienced Wigmore riders, so a very close contest was on the cards. Steve Gibson, who won the first two rounds wasn’t in action which meant a new name at the top of the podium.

Former Wigmore 25-mile champion Appleby was the fastest rider of the night with a time of 24min14sec for the five laps of the two-mile Iwade circuit. He beat last year’s series winner Walker into second place by 27 seconds.

Walker was just pleased to take the start having crashed in an event the previous weekend, leaving him with some unpleasant abrasions to his arms and legs.

Third place went to the fast-improving Jamie Harris who negotiated the very technical 10 mile event in 24.44, edging out another rider showing good form at the moment, Ed Everall.
