'Keep Calm, Carry On' is Nyakane and Boks' mantra if wily Aussies continue with tricks

To equate the prospect of World War II to a looming Rugby Championship battle between the Springboks and Wallabies in Sydney is definitely a stretch, but Trevor Nyakane believes adopting the enduring slogan of "Keep Calm and Carry On" is an ideal mantra for Saturday.

The phrase, a famous one coined by Britain's shadow ministry of information in 1939 to improve morale, is indeed exactly what the struggling South Africans will have to do if they are to avoid being hampered by the hosts' gamesmanship, which was an issue in last week's defeat in Adelaide.

That wasn't just confined to home scrumhalf Nic White's theatrics, but also shrewd if sly tactics in areas such as the scrum.

"At the end of the day, we all try to do what we can to come out victorious," said Nyakane.

"Whether people from the outside say foul play or gamesmanship is involved doesn't affect us. That's something for them to worry about. We have to focus on ourselves and whatever decisions are made, it's out of our control in the end."

As a result, the Boks will attempt to keep things simple and compartmentalised in this regard.

"The coaches continually tell us to move on to the next mini-battle during the game," said Nyakane.

"It's about viewing and dealing with incidents in isolation. You'll lose a few, but if you just focus on winning the next one, you'll invariably come out on top.

"Certain things happen to you in a game, it's about not letting it stick in your mind. Maybe it is a mistake you made and take ownership of. Other times it's a situation where you simply won't change the other person's [the referee's] mind.
