Keely Hodgkinson wins 800m at Oslo Diamond League meet, with Laura Muir in second

Keely Hodgkinson won the women’s 800m at the Bislett Games in Oslo last night for the Wanda Diamond League, defeating Laura Muir.

The 20-year-old crossed the line in a season’s best of 1:57.71, with Muir behind her in 1:58.09. Compatriot Jemma Reekie was eighth in 1:59.83.

It’s Hodgkinson's third Diamond League victory of the season, after taking victories in both Eugene and Birmingham.

‘I was fairly happy, but I wanted faster, a win is a win though,’ Hodgkinson told the British Athletics website after the race.

‘It was great to have that race with Laura and she’s running well. I’m trying to take it week by week, but I love championship racing and running the rounds, so I’m looking forward to Eugene.’

The World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, are now less than a month away, and chances of success are looking promising for the Olympic silver medallist.

Her compatriot Beth Dobbin also displayed strong form in Oslo last night, placing second in the women’s 200 metres in a PB of 23.01, behind Denmark’s Ida Karstoft.

Ama Pipi, Lina Nielsen, Jessica Turner and Jessie Knight came up trumps in the women’s 4 x 400m relay, with the Great Britain & N.I line up claiming victory over hosts Norway.

Over in the men’s races, Briton Reece Prescod took the runner-up spot in the men’s 100m, after being narrowly beaten by Canadian Olympic bronze medallist Andre de Grasse.

Jake Wightman and Neil Gourley came third and fourth respectively in the men’s Dream Mile, both running lifetime bests.

Wightman was originally locked in a battle with Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Ollie Hoare, who eventually pulled away from the Edinburgh athlete, with Ingebrigtsen setting a ferocious pace. The Norwegian took the top spot in 3:46.46 – narrowly
