Keane mocks fellow pundit Wright over ‘childish’ Liverpool act

Roy Keane ridiculed Ian Wright for his deference to the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign at Liverpool.

In the pre-match build-up to Liverpool’s game against Norwich, ITV Sport host Mark Pougatch said he “began the show at the top of the tunnel,” before asking the pair whether they ever had the chance to touch the sign before.

“Course,” Wright said when asked whether he ever touched the sign, “but I didn’t touch it when we were going out with the guys.

“When you went out for the warm-up, to look around, you touched it because it is iconic. It’s unbelievable. I had to touch it, I’m not going to not touch it.

“I didn’t want them to see me because I didn’t want them to feel it was disrespectful, because it’s not that it was disrespectful, I just wanted to touch that sign.”

Asked the same question, Keane replied: “No, of course not. No point.

“I think it’s OK, it’s a tradition for the English players, but not for the opposition players.

“I’m not sure why you touched it, Wrighty. It’s silly, it’s very childish. It’s very childish.”

Wright responded that he likes “the whole thing that comes with Liverpool” and loves “the fact that you can touch it” as “it’s an unbelievable thing to do,” which received a predictably short reply from Keane.

“It is childish. What benefit did you get out of touching it?” the Irishman said.

“I touched it. I’m one of the people that has touched that, because I bet there’s a lot of fans that haven’t touched that,” Wright responded.

“OK,” said Keane.
