Katzberg, Rogers sweep hammer throw events at Diamond League Silesia

Canada’s Camryn Rogers won the women’s hammer throw at the Diamond League meet Sunday at the massive Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland.

The Richmond, B.C., native’s best throw measured 77.09 metres, coming on her fourth attempt. Rogers is the reigning Olympic, world and Commonwealth Games champion.

American DeAnna Price finished second with a throw of 75.23 metres, while Italy’s Sara Fantini was third at 71.95.

Canadian hammer throw dominance continued with Nanaimo, B.C.’s Ethan Katzberg, who won the men’s event with a best throw of 82.92 metres.

Katzberg now holds Olympic, world and Commonwealth Games titles.

Germany’s Merlin Hummel finished second (81.25), while Hungary’s Bence Halász was third (79.44).

Andre De Grasse will compete in a loaded men’s 100m field featuring 18 sprinters, including reigning world champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica, two-time Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek of the United States and former world champion Christian Coleman.

The women’s 100m is equally stacked, featuring Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred, American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs, American star Sha’Carri Richardson, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist, as well as Tina Clayton, the runner-up at last year’s world championships.

The global track and field season will conclude with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, taking place Sept. 11-13 in Budapest.

Katzberg has automatically qualified for the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw.
