Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano sets new DAZN viewing record

On Saturday, April 30th, history was made as Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano walked out to face each other at Madison Square Garden in the world’s biggest women’s boxing match to date.

It was the first time two female fighters had ever headlined the famous New York venue, and the event was a sell-out. A 19,187 strong crowd filled the arena to watch Taylor defend her undisputed lightweight titles after a thrilling ten rounds with her Puerto Rican opponent.

The fight was broadcast live on DAZN and set a new viewing record for the platform as more than 1.5 million people tuned in around the world.

The viewing numbers make Taylor vs Serrano the platform’s most-watched female headlined boxing match in history.

Fans across 170+ markets worldwide watched the historic title clash. The DAZN app was reportedly the highest grossing sports app on both Apple and Google over the weekend of the fight.

The US and the UK led the viewing numbers, while Spain, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Italy, Japan, and Brazil made up the rest of the top ten.

Even Taylor’s promoter and Matchroom CEO Eddie Hearn admitted the magnitude of the fight exceeded his expectations and he reflected on how much women’s boxing has grown since he first started working with The Bray Bomber.

“If you’d have told me at that moment that we would be here with this fight, I’d say that was a tall task,” Hearn said in an interview prior to the fight. “Even when we [the tickets] went on sale — you hope it will do well but I wasn’t actually expecting it to do as well as it did. 

“But it’s a great moment for the sport and we keep saying it’s the biggest female fight of all time, it’s one of the biggest fights of all time.”
