Katie McCabe not getting carried away with Swedish draw

Katie McCabe wasn't getting carried away after the Republic of Ireland picked up a potentially massive point in their quest to reach the play-offs for next year's World Cup.

Against the world number two ranked Sweden, the Girls in Green absorbed a tremendous amount of pressure, but McCabe's first-half, deflected goal had them in prime position for a famous victory.

The Swedes' pressure eventually told in the second half as Kosovare Aslanni finished a well-worked move.

The result suited the hosts in Gothenburg as it guaranteed their place in Australia and New Zealand, while it also leaves the securing of second place very much in Ireland's hands. They currently trail second place Finland by two points, but they've played a game less.

The sides are set to meet in Tallaght in September.

Reflecting on this evening's draw, McCabe told RTÉ Sport: "It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be a battle.

"They're not second best in the world for no reason. We went into the game fully concentrating on what we had to do.

"A point away against Sweden, not a bad result."

"It's another point on our way to qualify for a World Cup. We've got three more massive games, so we're another step ahead but all of our focus now is on Georgia in June.

"We're fully focused on the job in hand and hopefully we'll get there."

Asked about her first-half goal, the Arsenal player added: "Sometimes the angles of some of our free-kicks aren't the best so we had a look and thought we'd put it out to Meg, whose got a fantastic delivery.
