Kate Garraway has recalled the moment she was told her husband Derek Draper had died - before his heart was restarted while she was at the other end of the phone having landed in Mexico where he had been receiving treatment at a brain cell clinic.

The Good Morning Britain star announced on January 5 that her husband and father of her two children - Darcey and Billy - had sadly passed away, almost four years after the former Labour lobbyist-turned-psychotherapist became ill with Covid at the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Derek was taken to hospital where he was put in an induced coma and it was more than a year before he returned home to his wife and their children in April 2021, needing around-the-clock care.

The 56-year-old then fell seriously ill before Christmas after suffering a cardiac arrest and died on January 3 aged 56 with Kate explaining that "the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."

Kate has now confirmed that Derek suffered the cardiac arrest while staying at a brain cell clinic in Mexico while she was mid-flight on her way to collect him. Though doctors were able to restart his heart, he never regained consciousness and after being flown home, he "slipped away" with his wife and children by his side.

In a new interview with The Times, Kate shared some insight into her last interactions with Derek and noted that his health seemed to be improving. She added: “We were in a very different place, health-wise, from the year before – and it felt like the happiest place.
