Kalvin Phillips told he would 'ruin relationship' with Leeds fans if he joined Manchester United

Kalvin Phillips has been told he would 'ruin his relationship' with Leeds fans if he decided to sign for Manchester United.

MEN Sport revealed that United are working hard to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford for next season. United have outlined a defensive midfielder as their number one target for the summer transfer window.

With Phillips currently playing for one of United's fiercest rivals and having grown up a Leeds supporter, there are some concerns about whether the club would be able to persuade him to move from Elland Road to Old Trafford. However, should he choose to do just that, he would not be the first and likely wouldn't be the last.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds and Manchester City defender Danny Mills warned the 26-year-old that he risks souring his relationship with the Leeds faithful if he joined United. "Will it ruin his relationship [with Leeds fans]? Without a shadow of a doubt.

"People will say, ‘It won’t happen, it can’t happen’. Well, it has happened in the past. Rio [Ferdinand] did it. He was only there for a year but Leeds gave him his big break, Manchester United came in and he moved on and went on to much bigger and better things.

"Alan Smith did it. The club was in a dire financial situation at the time but Smithy was die-hard Leeds. He had come through the system, not too dissimilar to Kalvin. He was a Leeds lad, a Leeds fan. People will say it’s different because he was from Rothwell, really? He was still a Leeds fan.
