Kalvin Phillips has shown he is the perfect Erik ten Hag player amid Manchester United interest

As revealed by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United will not advance with any transfers until they have finalised a deal for Erik ten Hag to become their next manager. The Ajax boss is expected to be appointed by United before the summer transfer window opens.

The club consider it vitally important that the next manager has a say on who they sign, meaning at this stage we won’t know for sure who United will target. However, we can make educated guesses based on the profiles Ten Hag will need to replicate his style and philosophy at Old Trafford.

At Ajax, Ten Hag usually plays either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, with possession and control key to his team’s success. While the defence and attack play crucial roles in his system, it’s arguably the midfield that’s most important when it comes to ascertaining their dominance over the opposition. To help secure control in this area of the pitch, Ten Hag relies upon governing midfielders who are commanding without the ball but also have the technical ability to influence play with it.

Right now, he relies predominantly on Ryan Gravenberch and Edson Álvarez. Both players are physical, robust and cover ground well. Ten Hag can therefore trust them to sit in front of his defence and break up threatening attacks. When they win the ball back though, they also have great technical profiles, able to dribble out of tight areas and play piercing forward passes into teammates ahead.
