Kaizer Chiefs off to losing start in new PSL season
Ricardo Nascimento scored in the first minute as Royal AM started the new league season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Chatswroth stadium on Saturday.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender found the back of the net, stabbing home after a scramble in the box with Amakhosi failing to properly clear a set-piece.
It was a new-look Chiefs outfit put out by head coach Arthur Zwane with new signings Zitha Kwinika, Siyethemba Sithebe, Yusuf Maart and Ashley Du Preez all starting the encounter.
After being stunned by conceding the opening goal so early, Amakhosi slowly started getting into the clash and Du Preez should have equalised in the 26th minute but was denied by home goalkeeper Hugo Nyame.
Royal AM were pegged back for most of the second half but looked dangerous on the counter-attack and with one such opportunity Nascimento could have doubled their lead but Chiefs shot-stopper Bruce Bvuma produced a stunning save.
Amakhosi threw everything into attack in the closing stages with another debutant Dillan Solomons making an appearance off the bench.
The Soweto giants though could not break down the solid defence from the hosts, who held on to claim maximum points from the encounter.
