Kabangu can't be Hearts one man show and carry huge weight of expectancy that has burdened Shankland - Ryan Stevenson

Elton Kabangu has made a flying start to life at Hearts.

But I really hope he doesn’t end up with the crushing weight of expectancy that has burdened Lawrence Shankland for way too long. Kabangu can’t be the answer to all the attacking issues. There has to be more both from inside the walls of Tynecastle and from others still not inside the building. It was brilliant to see Kabangu get off to his ideal beginning against Brechin City.

When you move to a new club, an instant impression is important and nabbing a couple of goals on debut is ideal for a striker. Straight away, you are off the mark but, naturally, other things come with that. The expectation levels rise, fans are immediately looking for it all the time and pinning all of their hopes onto the same shoulders.

It can’t be about one man and we’ve seen that with Shankland. I can’t remember any player at any club having such a burden as he has had to carry in the past year or so. He managed to cope with it through a magnificent last term but it was always going to catch up with him and now Shankland’s out of the side on the treatment table.

We don’t know how long that is going to be for and it’s terrific Kabangu is in the door and scoring already. But it’s crystal clear the club needs to keep adding more offensive weapons. There has to be more provisions added.

At least one more striker is needed to join the club and I’d be looking for one, or perhaps even two, wingers who can add goals to the team, too. That’s down to the recruitment department to get it right and make sure the correct individuals are sourced and signed.

Yet even if they do manage to find those gems before the end of the month, I’m still expecting more from those currently inside the dressing
