Justin Langer can turn around England cricket if appointed coach, says Matthew Hayden

“God help us” if Justin Langer becomes England coach.

The ominous warning for Australian cricket has been sounded by the former national coach’s opening batting partner Matthew Hayden after Langer resigned under “appalling” circumstances on Saturday morning.

Hayden, who believes the “extremely successful” Langer hasn’t been treated with the respect he deserves, says the former Test batsman will be the perfect candidate to replace sacked England caretaker Chris Silverwood.

“Sign him up,” Hayden told 7NEWS when asked if Langer should be headhunted to turn around England’s recent woes.

“If he can turn Cricket Australia around in four years, imagine what he could do with the England Cricket Board. God help us.”

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley confirmed on Saturday that there had been “some challenging conversations and some issues” around Langer’s leadership.

He said he accepted “many people will be disappointed” that “outstanding individual” Langer was only offered a six-month contract, with no opportunity for an extension.

But the retired opener was not part of the long-term plans for the team.

“We were pretty clear with Justin that it was for a period of transition,” Hockley said.

“When we sat down and looked at the needs of the team going forward, we felt that the team had evolved and the requirements of the head coach had.

“The decision to start a process of transition is what we believe is in the best interest of the men’s team for unity and future success.”
