Jurgen Klopp was wrong with concern about Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United
Cristiano Ronaldo had not even made his second debut for Manchester United and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had expressed signs of worry.
"Am I happy that he is at United? No, I can't say that," Klopp admitted, speaking in a feature-length, sit-down interview with Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool's clash with Leeds at Elland Road back in September.
Asked to elaborate further on why he was not happy with Ronaldo's Old Trafford homecoming, the German added: "Yes [he is too good], unfortunately.
"I was surprised, not about United, him going there in the end, but when I first heard the rumours about him wanting to leave Juventus. I had no idea about that.
"I am not in the Juventus circle when people inform me from time to time about what is going on there, so I was surprised about that.
"He was going to City and I thought 'oh, that could be fun for United' and then, obviously, United stepped in and did it. It's all fine. It's a free world and they can do what they want."
Admitting that he wasn't 'happy' with Ronaldo's return to United, it was clear that Klopp thought the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could be a big threat to his and Liverpool's hopes of wrestling the Premier League title back off Manchester City this season.
The title race, ahead of Ronaldo's return to United in August, was being built-up as a three-horse race, with Chelsea, Liverpool and City considered as the only genuine candidates.
However, United's decision to hijack Ronaldo's move to the Etihad Stadium, almost immediately, saw a three-horse race become four, according to many pundits. After all, one of the greatest players of all-time had returned to the Premier League, 13 years after saying adios ahead of joining Real Madrid.
