Jurgen Klopp trolled over £100m claim after Liverpool beat Manchester United to Darwin Nunez

Football fans have been poking fun at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the Merseyside outfit completing the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan international, who was also the subject of interest from United, is set to join Liverpool on a six-year contract in a deal that is set to be initially worth £64million. However, the final price could rise by an additional £21.3million with add-ons.

That could make Nunez Liverpool's most expensive signing of all-time, topping the £75million they invested in centre-back Virgil van Dijk back in January 2018. His arrival at Anfield will significantly boost Klopp's attacking options, despite Sadio Mane being expected to leave the club for Bayern Munich.

The addition of Nunez will also bolster Liverpool's hopes of competing for the Premier League title once again next season, with Klopp having laid the foundations over the last few years to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City. But it has not been without splashing the cash, with the Merseysiders having invested heavily in the likes of Alisson, Luis Diaz and Van Dijk in recent years.

Although every club in this day and age has, nine times out of ten, got to loosen the purse strings to taste success, the addition of Nunez goes against what Klopp said when United re-signed Paul Pogba for a then world-record fee of £89million back in August 2016. At the time, the German outlined why he was against big-money transfer fees.
