Junior Thompson makes promise ahead of Liverpool fight return after two-year absence
Junior Thompson has expressed his delight ahead of his boxing return in Liverpool, which comes after a two-year absence from the city.
The 30-year-old made an impression with two maiden victories in his professional career but saw things stall amid the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns.
That resulted in a lengthy absence from the ring, with Thompson admitting he was uncertain as to whether his career would continue, before ending 2021 with two further victories in Manchester.
Now, Thompson is set to return to Liverpool on Saturday evening for his latest outing in the ring at the Grand Central Hall and cannot wait for his latest opportunity.
"I haven't fought in Liverpool since February 2020, just before the first lockdown. I can't wait," he told
"I'm more looking forward to putting on a show for the people who came to support me in Manchester for the best part of 18 months. To be able to give them thanks for all their support, the travel they've done, is perfect."
Like many fighters, the pandemic led to a lengthy period outside of the ring for Thompson and his return last year with victory against Kyle Hughes was a huge boost.
"It was massive, a lot of things were uncertain, there were times where I thought I'd maybe have to knock this on the head and get a job, just crack on.
"Once the lockdown lifted and they were letting people back in the arenas and I was able to fight again, it was such a massive relief because I've put a lot of time and effort into this. For it to go because of lockdown and not being able to carry on would have been a huge shame."
