Judy Murray stumped Maria Sharapova with bizarre tea bag comparison as tennis legend left asking 'who is that?'

Tennis legend Maria Sharapova once admitted she had no idea who Judy Murray is - after Andy's mother and coach bizarrely compared her to a tea bag.

Murray is in the headlines after her tweet aimed at Emma Raducanu who pulled out of the Wimbledon mixed doubles at the last minute - ending son Andy's career at the tournament in the process. She later claimed it was sarcastic with the furious backlash forcing her to 'go dark' and lock her account.

These days she's a well-known name in the sport. But back in 2014? Not so much, according to Sharapova. Andy was enjoying the peak of his career in the 2014 season, coming off the back of his 2012 Olympic gold and his historic 2013 Wimbledon win. But not everyone knew who his mum was.

Judy, watching Sharapova defeat Garbine Muguruza to reach the Roland Garos semi-finals, she infamously tweeted: "Sharapova is like a tea bag. Put her into hot water and ul find out how strong she is."

It was a harmless and well-intentioned comparison, but Sharapova was left puzzled. When asked about it at her press conference, the former Women's No.1 and five-time Grand Slam winner said: "Who is that? Okay, sorry, I didn't know who Judy Murray is. I love tea. I am a big tea drinker. I don't understand what she means."

When it was explained she was Andy's mother and coach, Sharapova went on: "That's great. She's very creative. I guess she could have put it many different ways, and she chose the English version. I think it's better to ask her than me. Obviously, she has a better sense of what's going on out there."
