Journalist says potential Rangnick heir would be a "risk", people at Man Utd "really admire him"

Journalist Dean Jones believes that Ajax manager Erik ten Hag ‘will probably be seen as a risk’ when Manchester United consider who to appoint as Ralf Rangnick’s heir.

Rangnick arrived at Old Trafford back in November on an interim basis following the dismissal of former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is set to take up a consultancy role within the club in the summer.

According to The Athletic, United’s hierarchy have drawn up a four-man shortlist as they step up their search for their next permanent leader.

The report claims that Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui will all be considered for the role, with the appointment process set to begin in the coming weeks.

It also states that among the many factors being taken into consideration, the Red Devils are focusing their attention on candidates who have ‘experience of working at major European teams’.

Pochettino is currently in charge of Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, Ten Hag is enjoying a fruitful spell with Ajax, Enrique showcasing his ability with Spain after success with Barcelona, and Lopetegui is shining at Sevilla after a stint with Real Madrid.

Consequently, all four candidates fit into United’s desired remit and could be elected as the ideal candidate to lead the 20-time English champions into a new chapter of their illustrious history.

A recent survey amongst United supporters conducted by The Athletic revealed 58% of the club’s supporters want Ten Hag to be the next permanent manager.

It’s also believed that the Dutch tactician is highly thought of within the upper echelons of United, yet Jones believes his appointment would be viewed as hazardous by many.
