Journalist now drops interesting Danny Ings claim at Aston Villa after Southampton goal
Aston Villa striker Danny Ings will enjoy a goalscoring spree at some point this season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
The striker has struggled to find his form since making the £25m move from Southampton last summer but did end his wait for a goal by scoring against his former side on Saturday.
Ings is a proven marksman at Premier League level, scoring 34 goals in his final two years as a Saints player.
However, the 29-year-old has been unable to adapt to life at Villa Park and has been in and out of the team as a result.
Prior to the visit of Southampton last weekend, he had scored just four league goals for Villa and had only started four times since Steven Gerrard replaced Dean Smith.
But after starting the win over Brighton seven days earlier, Ings kept his place on Saturday and repaid the faith shown in him by Gerrard by producing his best performance of the campaign.
Ings’ 8.96 WhoScored rating was comfortably his best in a Villa shirt. He assisted goals for Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho before sweeping home Villa’s fourth of the afternoon to end his six game wait to find the back of the net.
The frontman will surely already have his eyes on Villa’s next fixture, and for good reason, too.
On Thursday, Gerrard’s side travel to Leeds, who have the worst defence in the top-flight this season, and Jones reckons that Ings’ goal against Southampton could be the start of something special for the ex-Liverpool man.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “Danny Ings has been around for a long time, and you’d like to believe that he’s got a goal run in him before the end of the season.”
