Journalist: Man City "confident" they're in "driving seat" if 80-goal sensation comes to England

Manchester City are confident of winning the race to sign Erling Haaland if he joins an English club, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Premier League leaders are long-term admirers of the Borussia Dortmund striker and are still looking to sign a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero following his departure last summer.

Having missed out on signing Harry Kane, City will be even more desperate to bring in a number nine ahead of next season.

Despite their lack of a striker, Pep Guardiola’s side remain on course to win their sixth Premier League title, while they’re virtually in the quarter finals of the Champions League after thrashing Sporting Lisbon 5-0 in their first leg last 16 tie and remain in the FA Cup.

But Haaland, who’s been in terrific form for Dortmund once again this term, scoring 23 goals in just 20 games to take his total tally for the club to 80, remains on City’s radar.

The 21-year-old has several top European clubs watching him and could leave Dortmund this summer, with his £63m release clause coming into play in June. Barcelona, PSG, and Real Madrid all remain interested, while Manchester United are keen having made signing a striker their top priority.

Chelsea are also in the race for Haaland following Romelu Lukaku’s struggles in front of goal since he returned to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan, but Jones reckons that City are confident of beating off competition from any of their Premier League rivals should the youngster choose to move to England.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Man City seem to be confident that if he comes to English football, they will be in the driving seat to sign him.”
