Journalist hints at big Lampard tactical switch as Everton lose 25 y/o

Chris Beesley has been speaking on the Everything is Black and White podcast about the tactical change Frank Lampard may make for Everton’s crunch clash this week.

Everton were once again swept aside by a fellow Premier League team last week when Wolves beat them 1-0, restricting the Toffees to just two shots on target, so after just one league win since taking charge in January, Lampard may look to make some tactical changes on Thursday.

Lampard has confirmed that Yerry Mina, Fabian Delph and Tom Davies are out through injury with Jonjoe Kenny set to miss the relegation crunch match through suspension, which may force Lampard’s hand when it comes to what formation he picks.

Beesley believes most Evertonians would like to see Lampard play three players in midfield against Newcastle.

(19:46) “He will have lost Jonjoe Kenny now with suspension so that could either mean Michael Keane coming in like for like on the right-hand side of a back three.

“Or he may do what a lot of people want him to do, is to restore three men in midfield which means switching to a flat back four and go with an extra man in midfield.”

TIF Thoughts on the potential change Lampard could make…

If Lampard was to opt for a three-man midfield and thus match up Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, then it would surely see Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and Donny van de Beek form a midfield base to combat the Magpies’ which could consist of Joe Willock, Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff.

Against Wolves, Lampard went with a three man defence that saw right-back Jonjoe Kenny as a third centre back and 33-year old Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder which makes little sense, so a switch back to a 4-3-3 would likely see the Toffees become a lot more comfortable on the ball
