Josh Dasilva stuns Nottingham Forest to snatch late victory for Brentford

While Brentford’s fans goaded the opposition with chants of “you’re going down”, those in the away end who had travelled down from the Midlands stood in silent disbelief. For so long, their side had fought resolutely for what appeared to at first be a win, and then a draw, that might have proved so crucial to their Premier League fate.

And then, deep into seven minutes of injury time, it was all gone. Thoughts returned once again to relegation.

The crushing blow arrived in two stages. First came a jab from Ivan Toney, who became the first Brentford player in almost a century to score 20 goals in a top-flight season, by squeezing a free-kick past Keylor Navas at the near post.

That equaliser on 82 minutes would have not totally ruined the away fans’ day, but Josh Dasilva then delivered the knockout blow soon before the final whistle. The Brentford substitute picked up the ball down the right before expertly biding his time and curling past the Costa Rican goalkeeper.

When his Forest side ended their run of 11 winless games with victory against Brighton earlier in the week, Steve Cooper insisted it was not right to “celebrate too much” after going months without a victory.

Given their atrocious away record this season – with just six points and eight goals from 17 games – heading back from their travels with anything to show from this game would have been an achievement. Instead they remain perilously close to the relegation zone.
