Jose Mourinho U-turn has taught Erik ten Hag a valuable lesson ahead of his Man United arrival

Manchester United fans had a tempestuous relationship with Jose Mourinho. Despite being the most successful manager at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson, his personality and dismissal of the club's values caused friction with the fanbase and he was never truly accepted during his time at the club.

This theme continued when he became the manager of Tottenham Hotspur and many expected the same result when Mourinho took over at Roma. However, with the Italian club now in the final of the Europa Conference League, it seems this may not be the case.

Roma beat Leicester in the semi-final of the competition on Thursday night and they'll now face Feyenoord in the showpiece event. On an emotional night for all involved, the Portuguese manager was even seen shedding a tear after the final whistle.

When asked about the moment in his post-match press conference, Mourinho said: "Why did I shed a tear? Because I feel what [the fans] all feel. It’s a giant club without a trophy room for the social importance of this club. I know what it means to these people and my emotion was for them. I’ve been lucky enough to be in more prestigious finals but this made me feel very special.

"We have a sense of family. With age you become less selfish and more of a father or even a grandfather to some of them, I’m very happy for all of them. Rome is a red and yellow city, we’ll see the joy over the coming days. I’ve made a small contribution to that."

How he has acted throughout his tenure at Roma has endeared him to the fanbase, who had their reservations when Mourinho was appointed due to his previous role at Inter Milan and the reputation he had gained
