Jose Mourinho slapped with ban after Anthony Taylor Europa League final abuse

Jose Mourinho has been hit with a four-match ban by UEFA after verbally abusing Manchester official Anthony Taylor following the Europa League final.

Taylor was the referee for the showpiece between Mourinho's Roma and Sevilla, which the Spanish side won on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Former Manchester United boss Mourinho was angry with some of the decisions made during the game and ranted at Taylor in a car park after the contest. In video footage which later emerged on social media he was seen gesticulating at Taylor and officials and heard saying “disgrace”.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho accused the Wythenshawe official of favouring Sevilla and said Taylor 'seemed Spanish to me.' The Portuguese faced widespread criticism in the aftermath and was charged by UEFA on June 2.

Mourinho said: "I need to defend my lads, and I must say that we are used to it, but still seeing this kind of refereeing in a European final is really, really hard. It was an intense, vibrant game with a referee who seemed Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time."

He has now been hit with a suspension which means he will not be in the dug-out for the first four group matches in next season's Europa League.

Taylor and his family were also confronted by angry Roma supporters at Budapest Airport as they flew home from the final in Hungary, with police protection given. That was condemned by the Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).
