Jose Mourinho predicted Manchester United's David De Gea transfer problem

David de Gea's time at Manchester United could well be at an end with his contract poised to run out.

The 32-year-old has been at United since 2011 when he was brought to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid by Sir Alex Ferguson. The Spaniard has gone on to become the first choice goalkeeper for much of his time at the club.

But though talks are ongoing between the player and the club, it is looking increasingly likely that De Gea will depart United this summer and become a free agent. He has made almost 550 appearances for the Reds in 12 years, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cup and the Europa League in his time in Manchester.

De Gea is thought to earn around £350,000 a week at United as one of the top earners. The potential new deal on offer at the club would see his wages drop.

That last deal was signed in 2019 during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign and that, according to former United boss Jose Mourinho, was the moment the long-term planning should have been clear.

"I think the moment when he signed his huge contract, is the moment I don't think United needs to pay as much as that to have him," Mourinho told Sky Sports in 2020.

"One or two years ago he had the world after him, in this moment, the majority of the big doors were closed. The Real Madriddoor is closed, they don't need a goalkeeper after [Thibaut] Courtois.

"Barcelona is closed with young and fantastic [Marc-Andre] ter Stegen and Paris Saint-Germain is closed too as they signed Keylor Navas who is a very good goalkeeper.
