Jordan Campbell drops immediate Helander reaction from St Mirren; it's 'not what Rangers need'

The 28-year-old has endured a wretched time with injuries since arriving in Scotland from Serie A side Bologna in 2019 for a reported £3.5million (BBC).

After missing 22 matches in 2019/20 with a foot problem, the fully-fledged Sweden international has already been absent for 32 fixtures this term following knee surgery.

Now it appears that the towering centre-back could be facing another spell on the sidelines…

Taking to Twitter, journalist Campbell lamented the 19-cap Swedish ace’s latest setback: “Filip Helander now down. Not what Rangers need.”

Helander was left floored following a battle with Eamonn Brophy and was replaced before half-time by 18-year-old Leon King as Giovanni van Bronckhorst was forced to reshuffle the pack once more – John Lundtram went off earlier in the half with a suspected groin issue.

The Gers now face the prospect of being without Ianis Hagi, Ryan Jack, Alfredo Morelos, Lundstrum and Helander for the Scottish Cup semi-final showdown at Hampden Park against Celtic.

Issues are well and truly mounting up now for Rangers and yet another problem for the Swedish defender has come at the worst possible time with a must-win Europa League second leg clash with Braga on the horizon.

Branded a ‘leader’ following a string of impressive early displays at Ibrox, losing the powerful defender, who has made 3 clearances, one tackle and 3.2 aerial duels per game (Sofascore), is a big blow to Van Bronckhorst’s plans.

Should the Swede indeed face a prolonged spell in the treatment room at Murray Park, the Dutch boss may turn to Leon Balogun or the lesser-seen Jack Simpson to partner Connor Goldson.

In other news, Rangers have reportedly made a decision over loan ace, find out more here!
