Jonjo Shelvey predicts Newcastle United will become as big as Man City

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey believes that his current club will one day become as big as Man City.

The north east club were bought by Saudi Arabia's PIF consortium earlier this season with club directors Amanda Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi the face of the ownership at Newcastle. Since their arrival, the Magpies have been in impressive form and now find themselves clear of a relegation battle after appointing Eddie Howe as their manager.

Shelvey, however, is not content with simply avoiding relegation. He is convinced that his team will become a force in world football similar to City.

Speaking about Newcastle's development in the coming years, the former Liverpool and Swansea star told Sky Sports: "I feel in time the club will be like massive, massive club, you know we are talking like the Man Citys and Paris Saint-Germains.

"I think they are going to get to that stage but obviously that takes time and is a building process but the owners here are doing the right things. It is step-by-step but you have to be patient."

It is not the first time that Newcastle have expressed their aspirations to emulate City. Back in October, Staveley told the Mail: "Of course we have the same ambitions as Manchester City and PSG in terms of trophies, absolutely, but that will take time."
