Jonathan Caldwell misses out on DP World Tour card in Spain

Jonathan Caldwell has missed out on a tour card for next year after finishing in a tie for 47th at the DP World Tour qualifying school in Spain.

The Down man needed to finish within the top 25 and ties after Wednesday's final round at the Lakes Course at Infinitum Golf in Tarragona but a one-over round of 72 saw him miss out on that cut-off point by three shots.

Having started the day in a tie for 24th and with genuine hopes of winning back his tour card, Caldwell's round featured four birdies but a pair of double bogeys, on five and 16, as well as a further shot dropped on nine proved costly as he failed to build on four previous days of consecutive under-par rounds that had kept him in contention.

The 39-year-old had been the only Irish player at the qualifying event to make the cut, with Mark Power, Conor O'Rourke, Ruaidhri McGee, Conor Purcell and Dermot McElroy all bowing out after round four.

Germany's Freddy Schott was the overall winner in Tarragona, finishing on 27 under, 16 shots clear of Caldwell, and was among the 33 players to secure their tour cards.

As it stands, Tom McKibbin will be Ireland's only full-time member consistently playing on the DP World Tour in 2024.
