Jon Rahm withdraws from Players due to illness, Shane Lowry and Seamus Power miss cut

Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the Players Championship ahead of his second round because of illness.

The Spaniard, ranked world number one, had recorded a one-under-par 71 in his first round on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass.

Rahm tops the FedExCup standings having won three tournaments, most recently the Genesis Invitational last month.

He had been due to tee off alongside American Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who are both in position take over the number one spot with good results this week.

With the second round well under way, lowly-ranked American Chad Ramey maintained his one-shot advantage prior to taking to the course again.

Collin Morikawa continued to sit second, with Ben Griffin moving into third on six under after a one-under-par round of 71.

Shane Lowry looks set to miss the cut by one shot despite shooting 69 as his opening day 77 proved costly.

Lowry went bogey, eagle, birdie, bogey, bogey in his opening five holes but sank three further birdies to move to -3 for the day by the second hole, his 11th.

Back-to-back bogeys on four and five were cancelled out with a pair of birdies but the Offaly man needed to birdie the final par five to put himself in the mix and could only manage par, finishing on two over overall.

Seamus Power had a day to forget, his five-over 77 leaving him on eight over for the tournament.

McIlroy teed off just before 6pm Irish time, needing to make up at least three shots to squeeze into the top 65.
