Join Britain’s Litter Heroes cleaning up our communities
More than 30 million tonnes of litter are dropped across Britain every year.
Not only is it a visible blight on our communities, but it also harms wildlife and costs an estimated £1billion annually to clear up.
The good news is that environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean* and Great Big School Clean are returning on 13-29 March, when once again hundreds of thousands of people will be helping to make our streets sparkle.
Since starting life as a one-off event in 2016, an army of Litter Heroes have shown they love where they live by pledging to pick up more than 4.5 million bags of rubbish from Britain’s streets, parks, fields, riverbanks and beaches.
The Great British Spring Clean takes place from 13-29 March. Sign up today at keepbritaintidy.org and pledge to collect any number of bin bags you choose.
You can pledge as a group, an individual or a school. Just register your name, email address and postcode, and say how many bags you plan to pick up.
Last year alone, almost 400,000 volunteers took part in the annual litter pick, filling around 462,000 bags of rubbish. And according to a survey of participants, 95% agreed their efforts made a noticeable difference to their local area.
Among this year’s supporters is civil servant Emdad Rahman, one of Keep Britain Tidy’s 200 inspirational Litter Hero Ambassadors, funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. He is also one of the faces of the charity’s national advertising campaign for the Great British Spring Clean.
Emdad runs the Little Litter League, a scheme encouraging young people and their families to take pride in the environment. He leads regular litter-picking sessions, and believes education is vital to creating long-term change.
