John Stones sends condolences on behalf of Man City after death of Man United icon Sir Bobby Charlton

John Stones has passed on condolences on behalf of everyone at Manchester City after the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton.

It was announced on Saturday afternoon by the family of Charlton that the Manchester United legend has died at the age of 86. The football icon made 758 appearances for United and won the European Cup in 1968 as well as the World Cup with England in 1966.

City were playing out their 2-1 win over Brighton at the time of the announcement and after the match Stones took the time to pay tribute to Charlton. "First and foremost, our condolences, our deepest condolences to Sir Bobby's family, everyone surrounding him, everyone who came into contact with him," he told the BBC. "A legend of the game and he'll be sadly missed.

"It's such sad news, we just heard about, so I think on behalf of everyone at City, players, fans, everyone involved, I would like to pass on our deepest condolences."

City and United will meet next weekend for the first Manchester derby of the season. When put to him that the match will now be even more emotionally charged, Stones replied: "Of course, yeah, I'm sure both sides will do him proud of sporting occasion, a city that recognises incredible football. A legend of the game, as I've just said, it's an exciting one for us personally."
