John Stones explains how Pep Guardiola influenced Man City equaliser vs Borussia Dortmund

John Stones has revealed the influence that Pep Guardiola had for his goal, after he scored from outside the box for Manchester City against Borussia Dortmund last night.

City came from behind to beat Dortmund 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, as Guardiola's side recorded their second Champions League win of the season. Jude Bellingham gave the visitors the lead after getting on the end of a Marco Reus cross to head the ball home in the 56th minute.

Stones eventually found City's reply with ten minutes to go as he rifled the ball home from the edge of the area. Erling Haaland added another goal to his tally for the Blues just four miniutes later, as he flung himself in the air to acrobatically get on the end of Joao Cancelo's cross to the back post to make it 2-1.

The former Everton defender has now scored thirteen goals in 201 appearances for City across all competitions. Many were surprised that Stones not only scored, but also how advanced a position he found himself in up the pitch.

The Blues defender explained to BT Sport after the match that Guardiola's tactics played a pivotal role in allowing him to get on the scoresheet last night.

He said: "I try and take up those positions. The manager wants us in those sorts of areas for things like that and to control the counter attack as well. We were in good positions to pick up the pieces and it was one of those things. I was getting a few shouts and I just decided to pull the trigger."
