John Ruddy opens up about Wolves exit as Birmingham City given triple fitness boost

John Eustace insists prospective owners Maxi Lopez and Paul Richardson were "very positive" during talks with the Birmingham City manager last week,

The pair are working to complete a takeover after Laurence Bassini missed deadlines to take control of the club himself. Lopez and Richardson have been granted exclusivity to complete a deal with current club owners Birmingham Sports Holdings, while a report claimed the duo were set to do due diligence on the club’s books.

A takeover would end months of speculation and uncertainty around the Championship club after shareholder Vong Pech confirmed he would be selling his 21.64% stake. Blues begin their Championship campaign this Saturday by travelling to Kenilworth Road to take on Luton Town and boss Eustace claims he is ignoring outside noise suggesting his side are one of the favourites for the drop this season.

Eustace told The Athletic: "It’s not nice to hear but it’s an opportunity for us to prove people wrong, roll our sleeves up and make sure that we fight and we scrap for each other,” he says. “I’m very proud to be managing this football club."

Eustace spoke with Lopez and Richardson last week and revealed the details to The Athletic. He said: "They were very positive when they spoke about what they wanted to do with the club but all I’m focused on is making sure that we’re prepared for this season."

Birmingham City look to have been boosted by the return to fitness of Dion Sanderson ahead of their season opener at Luton Town this weekend.

The club used their official Twitter account to show footage from Friday’s training session – which featured not just Sanderson but George Friend and Lukas Jutkiewicz also taking part with the first team squad.
