John Kelly breaks Irish shot put record at Cork City Sports
John Kelly set a new Irish senior record for the shot put at the Cork City Sports meet on Tuesday night with a huge throw of 20.16 metres that earned him third place.
Italy's Nick Ponzio finished first with a 20.71m throw, ahead of American Andrew Liskowitz, but the performance of Kelly marks another huge step forward for the Finn Valley athlete as he built on the strong form he's shown in recent weeks.
Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock) was fourth with a 20.11m effort.
On the track, some of Ireland's young stars set big personal bests, including both Darragh McElhinney who won the 3,000m in seven minutes 44.01 seconds. Nick Griggs was third in the same race.
Sarah Healy won the women's race over the same distance in 8:46.14.
In the 100m hurdles, Sarah Lavin took second in a lifetime best of 12.84.
Other winners included Phil Healy in the 400m (52.06) and Israel Olatunde in the 100m (10.31).
