John Kear departs Bradford Bulls following losing streak

John Kear has left Bradford Bulls. Rugby League Live can reveal Kear has left his post at Odsal after more than four seasons in charge and becomes the second coaching casualty of the season following the departure of Richard Agar from Leeds Rhinos.

It's believed a meeting between Kear and the club's owners took place on Tuesday, hours after their defeat on Premier Sports to Championship table toppers Featherstone Rovers. A decision was made to part ways after a fourth straight defeat.

Kear, who has enjoyed a superb coaching career spanning four decades, took over the Bulls at their lowest ebb following relegation to League 1. He guided the club back to the Championship at the first time of asking and oversaw top half finishes during the 2019 and 2021 seasons. He also wrote another chapter in his famous Challenge Cup career after the Bulls famously defeated Leeds Rhinos in 2019, taking the club to the quarter-final stage.

But a string of four straight defeats have hampered the club's start to the season and they currently sit ninth in the table after nine rounds.

Official confirmation is expected later today.

Kear, who is set to coach Wales at the World Cup, has enjoyed success throughout his coaching career. He memorably won the Challenge Cup with Sheffield Eagles in 1998 , still regarded as the greatest shock in the competition's history. He won the trophy again in 2005 with Hull FC before making the move to Wakefield Trinity, where he steered the club clear of relegation against the odds. Wakefield would finish ninth in 2009, which remains their joint-best finish to a Super League season, before moving on to Batley.
