John Higgins out of World Snooker Championships after being 'overpowered' by Kyren Wilson in quarter-final

John Higgins admits the 'best man won' after he was "overpowered" by Kyren Wilson at the World Snooker Championships last night, as The Wizard of Wishaw saw his hopes of winning a fifth world title come to a halt in a 13-8 quarter-final defeat.

After producing a remarkable comeback from the jaws of defeat in his last 16 tie against Mark Allen on Tuesday, Higgins never really got going in the last eight tie and trailed the entire match. Higgins threatened to mount another impressive comeback, having trailed 9-4 and battling back to make it 9-8. However, his opponent stepped up a gear to take the next four frames in succession with breaks of 46, 56, 101 and 61 to send 48-year-old Higgins crashing out at the Crucible.

And the four-time champion admitted: “He just overpowered me. I told him at the end it was the best I had seen him. The best man won.

“I was really lethargic in the second session. To get out at 9-7, I felt like I’d won the lottery but he was too strong. I hope he is holding the trophy aloft with his son on Bank Holiday Monday. I am committing to playing snooker and committed to trying to get back playing here. I don’t want that to be my last match at the Crucible.“

A delighted Wilson said: “John’s given me a few big hidings, I’m really proud of myself. I was resilient, my mental strength was great.”

It was a day which also saw Ronnie O'Sullivan crash out after he lost 13-10 to Stuart Bingham. The semi-finals will see Kyren Wilson face David Gilbert and Stuart Bingham play Jak Jones. Both ties will begin today.
