John Bennett wants to free Rangers from shackles of suspicion and leaves Neil Doncaster facing 2 questions - Keith Jackson

Three weeks ago this column predicted the long running and highly farcical feud between Rangers and the SPFL over title sponsors cinch might finally be about to be put to bed.

And furthermore that, on this occasion, the men in charge of the Ibrox club were more than likely to be vindicated and validated as being on the right side of the argument. So, even though it may have felt as if it came straight out of the blue, it was no great surprise on Friday when the league’s Teflon Don of a chief executive, Neil Doncaster, issued an apology and announced peace between the two warring factions had suddenly broken out.

There are now only a couple of questions which remain unresolved. How much damage has been done to Doncaster’s reputation as a credible, fully functioning figurehead of the league? And do Rangers intend to keep piling on the pressure until such times as they have his head speared on the end of a stick? The answer to the first is yet to be fully established although we’ll find out more about the general mood music today when Doncaster fronts up the SPFL’s annual general meeting.

The answer to the second ought to become a great deal more clear if, as expected, James Bisgrove is voted on to Doncaster’s own board this afternoon. The recently promoted Rangers CEO is one of five candidates who will be up for election along with Ross County’s James McDonald, Malcolm McPherson of Hibs, Aberdeen’s Alan Burrows and Phyllis McLeish of Kilmarnock, with only three seats available.

If Bisgrove is successfully appointed at the ballot box then his presence on Hampden’s sixth floor will help to further soothe the leaky sores which have been festering so openly over these past few years. And it will add to the sense that Rangers,
