John Bateman shuts down George Williams as he launches defence of England teammate

John Bateman has mounted a fierce defence of George Williams and said the criticism his England team-mate has received this season is “a load of b******t”. Wigan Warriors forward Bateman starred alongside Warrington Wolves playmaker Williams in Saturday’s mid-season international against the Combined Nations All Stars.

England won 18-4 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and Bateman took centre stage with a brilliant assist for Williams’ first-half try before getting on the scoresheet himself after the interval. Bateman won two Super League titles alongside Williams in the cherry and white of Wigan and reckons his former club-mate remains one of the best half-backs in the game.

Williams has largely underwhelmed since joining the Wolves midway through last season from Canberra Raiders but showed glimpses of his undeniable talent against the All Stars.

“It’s good to play with George,” Bateman said. “He’s had a tough year and a lot of people have been at him but – and I apologise for swearing – I think it’s a load of b******t.

“He’s one of the best players on his day. It’s hard sometimes when you’re in a team that's not winning but George for me is the best out there. He’s one of those players I’d have by my side any day of the week. Playing for England gets your confidence up. I hope they (Warrington) don’t go back and win too many games but I hope George plays well. He’s my mate and a team-mate as well.”
