Joe Fortune to continue with Westmeath in 2024

Joe Fortune is set to continue as Westmeath hurling manager into 2024.

Fortune was appointed in September 2021 and has led the county through two Leinster campaigns, as they finished fifth in 2022 before being relegated this year. It means that they will be playing in the Joe McDonagh Cup in 2024.

The Lake County will compete in Division 1 of the Allianz League, after they won the Division 2 final in 2022, and then maintained their spot in the top flight during the 2023 campaign, after victory over Laois in the promotion/relegation play-off in the spring.

His most impressive championship results have included a draw and a victory over Wexford, which led to speculation that the Enniscorthy native might be in the running for the vacant manager's job on Slaneyside.

But today's confirmation from Westmeath GAA rules Fortune out of that race, with the Wexford SHC semi-finals due to take place this weekend.

"Joe Fortune has agreed to remain in post for a third year as the Westmeath senior hurling manager for 2024," the statement read.

"Selectors and backroom team will be confirmed later. The Westmeath County Board wishes Joe and the team the very best of luck during the season ahead."
