Joao Cancelo has forced Pep Guardiola to learn from his 'mistakes' with Man City form

It is very rare that a player is considered one of the best in his position in two different roles, but Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo certainly has a case to be in that minority. The Portuguese defender, who would typically operate from right-back, has transformed himself into one of the best left-backs in the world in recent years.

After arriving at the Etihad Stadium in 2019, Cancelo struggled for game time and was often used at left-back due to the form of England international Kyle Walker. However, the 28-year-old quickly adapted to his new role and became a vital part of the side that won the Premier League title at the end of his first campaign in England.

In his first season, the defender made 33 appearances, whereas the following term, he featured on 43 occasions. As his game time increased, so did his goal contributions. Even though he probably wasn't - and still isn't - considered the club's first-choice right-back, his ability to perform at a high level on both flanks became a weapon that Pep Guardiola loved to utilise.

However, Guardiola, speaking in February of this year, admitted that him and the Portuguese star did not see eye to eye when the player first arrived at City, mainly down to his own "mistakes".

"We struggled when he arrived, we did not agree on many things, partly because of my mistakes, but now I’m delighted he’s fully happy and can play here for the next seasons," said Guardiola.

"He can play in many positions, can play every day, physicality, he’s so funny and loved in the locker room.
