Joao Cancelo completes move from Man City to Barcelona

Joao Cancelo has completed a season-long loan move to Barcelona.

The Manchester City full-back has been out of favour at the Etihad and is yet to make an appearance this season. He was loaned out to Bayern Munich in January but Thomas Tuchel revealed this summer the club would not be making the move permanent due to financial issues.

Reports suggested Bayern could U-turn on their stance and make a deadline day swoop for Cancelo, but the Portugal international has now completed a temporary switch to Barca. The La Liga champions will pay all of Cancelo’s wages but the deal will not contain an option to buy him at the end of the season.

City boss Pep Guardiola was asked about Cancelo earlier this summer and he refused to close the door on a return to first-team action at the Etihad. Speaking ahead of City’s pre-season clash with Yokohama F Marinoa, the Catalan said: "He is here. Joao has been so important for us in the past. He is back here and is part of the group. We will see what happens."

However, Guardiola also claimed he “cannot answer” when asked about the future of certain players, admitting that “many things can happen”.

Sergio Gomez is now the only natural left-back at City, though Guardiola has been known to experiment with a number of different players in the position. Josko Gvardiol has already been trialled there and Nathan Ake filled in last season. Rico Lewis is another who has been asked to play on the left of a back-four, with Bernardo Silva even dropping into the backline last term.
